従来、基本的な一般歯科医師としての卒後教育を修了し試験に合格した資格の名称は、FDS: The Fellowship in Dental SurgeryとFFD: The Fellowshp in the Faculty of Dentistryの二つであって、この資格を修得するのにどこの組織の試験を受けたかを追記することになります。しかし受験資格の問題で資格習得者は多くありませんでした。
歯科は、Royal College of Surgeons (RCS)の範疇に入ります。これが地域別に組織されているために、
FDS RCSEg: The Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England、
FDS RCSEd: The Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh
FDS RCPSGlasg: The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow
FFD RCSIre: The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland
というふうに名称が異なってくるわけです。
日本では専門医資格を標榜・掲示することは禁止されていますが、英国では専門医資格の標榜は可能で、病院・診療所の掲示だけでなく広告にも記載しています。
Eastman Dental Institute のScully学長の称号を例としてみますと、以下のようになります。Professor Crispian Scully MD, PhD, MDS, FDSRCS, FDSRCPS, FFDRCSI, FDSRCSE, FRCPath, FMedSci
MD: Doctor of Medicine 医師
PhD: Doctor of Philosophy 博士(Acaademic Degree)
MDS: Master of Dental Surgery 修士(Clinical Degree)

S RCPS: The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (of England) FDS

MFDS/MFDを修得した後に履修する専門医資格コースは非常に多種あります。研修を受けその研修の証明書を修得し資格試験を受験しますが、その教育期間も研修機関で異なっていてかなり多様で複雑です。受験料は資格によって異なっていますが中には800ポンド（約16万円）という高額な受験料もみられます。
CCST資格認定を受け合格すると専門医としてGeneral Dental Councilに登録されます。歯科医師免許と同じように、登録されて初めて専門医を標榜することができます。
卒後資格修得のためのガイド本であるGuide to postgraduate degrees, diplomas & courses in Dentistryは、序において「この本は海外からの歯科医師の参考のために作成した」と明記しています。
この序の文章をみても卒後教育が各国からの歯科医師の英国内への流入に対する教育システムと位置づけられると思います。母国での歯学教育レベルも異なり、そして歯科医師の倫理や法律も異なる諸国からの歯科医師（英国歯科医師の13.65%）の教育は英国にとって大きな課題になっているのではないでしょうか。
